China City Season & Weather Guide

When to go, what the weather is like, and how bad the air pollution gets. Data for 38 cities.

Climate at a glance, 38 cities

China spans five climate zones, so when to go depends entirely on the city. January averages -30°C in Mohe and 22°C in Sanya, while July reaches 31°C in Shenzhen. Beijing and Xi'an peak in September and October, Shanghai in October and November, Guangzhou and Shenzhen from November to April. The table gives four benchmark months for all 38 cities, with the winter air quality that decides how comfortable a visit feels.

January, April, July and October mean temperatures in degrees Celsius, with the average air quality index across the winter months.

How to read these numbers

These are monthly climate averages, not forecasts. Temperature is in degrees Celsius, rainfall in millimetres, and air quality as an average AQI reading for the winter months, when it is usually worst. Read the AQI column as a rough guide to whether to pack a mask rather than as a health measure. Air quality across eastern China has improved substantially since 2015, so older guidebooks read worse than the current reality. Check a forecast within a week of travelling.
